Dead Cat Bounce or Real Recovery? How to Tell on a Memecoin

Every crash has a bounce. Most of them are the last exit, not the start of the next leg.

Guide to telling a dead cat bounce from a real recovery on memecoin charts

A dead cat bounce is a sharp rise after a sharp fall that doesn’t go anywhere. The name is old and unkind: drop something far enough and it’ll bounce, even if it’s dead. On memecoins it’s the most common chart shape there is after the crash itself, and it catches the same people every time, because it looks exactly like what they were hoping for.

Why memecoins bounce so reliably

Three mechanical reasons, none of them bullish.

Short covering and bot reversion. Bots that sold into the cascade buy back the moment the sell pressure stops, and on a thin pool that alone moves the price 20 or 30%.

Dip buyers who think the drop was the opportunity. A coin that was $40 million yesterday and is $8 million today looks cheap to anyone who anchors to the old number. They buy, the price rises, and for an hour the chart looks alive.

Holders who stopped selling. The panic sellers have sold. The ones left are either committed or asleep. For a moment there’s no supply, and no supply plus a little demand is a green candle.

None of those involve new attention, new buyers who’ll stay, or a reason the coin should be worth what it was. They’re the market exhaling.

What a dead cat bounce looks like

Fast, on falling volume relative to the crash, with no change in the holder count. It typically retraces a quarter to a half of the drop, stalls at a level where the previous day’s buyers are relieved to break even, and then resumes down on even less volume than before. The Telegram goes from “we’re so back” to quiet in about the same time it took the bounce to happen.

The tell is that nobody new showed up. The same wallets, the same chat, a slightly better price.

What a real recovery looks like

Slower, usually. It starts with the price going sideways rather than up, because the selling has genuinely finished. Holders rise during the flat period, which means people are arriving while nothing’s happening, and that’s the single most reliable sign that the base is real. Volume comes back gradually, from new wallets rather than the old ones churning. And something has changed: a catalyst, a listing, a meta rotating back, a community that kept building through the drop.

CATE’s round trip from $90 million to $25 million and back above $100 million had those signatures. The holder count held through the drawdown and the community didn’t go quiet. Most coins that drop 70% don’t have either.

Four checks, in order

Holders. Rising during the bounce means new people. Flat means it’s the same people and it’s a bounce.

Volume. A recovery brings volume that grows over days. A dead cat is one spike that fades within hours.

Who’s buying. Click into the wallets on the buy side. Fresh wallets and new names are a recovery. The same top holders adding is conviction but not confirmation. Bots are neither.

What changed. If you can’t name the reason it should be worth more than it was an hour ago, nothing changed, and the price is just the chart breathing. Why memecoins move is the longer version.

What to do with one

If you’re holding, a bounce is the best liquidity you’ll see for a while. Selling some into it is the trade most people wish they’d made. Will my memecoin come back has the question that settles whether to sell all of it.

If you’re not holding, the bounce is not the entry. The sideways period after it, with holders rising, is. Buying the bounce means buying from the relieved sellers, which is exit liquidity with better lighting.

And either way, don’t trade it on feel. The bounce is designed to feel like vindication, and the psychology of a trader who’s just been proved right for an hour is the psychology that gives the rest back.

Axxel supports limit and trailing orders, stop loss and take profit, and token analysis across Ethereum, Base, BSC, Solana and Robinhood Chain, so a bounce can be sold into with an order placed before it arrives. Flat 0.9%, non-custodial, no subscription.

Everything bounces. The question is whether anyone new is underneath it.

Crypto trading carries risk. Most memecoins lose value. Nothing here is financial advice. Axxel is not available in all regions.
