Glossary of crypto and memecoin trading terminology

Crypto has more slang per square inch than any market in history. Here's the working set, grouped by where you'll meet it.

Tokens and markets

Memecoin. A token with no utility whose value comes entirely from attention. Full explanation.

Market cap. Circulating supply multiplied by price. Not money invested, just arithmetic. Why it misleads.

FDV. Fully diluted valuation. Total supply times price, including tokens not yet circulating.

Liquidity. The real money sitting in a token's pool. The ceiling on what anyone can get out. Full guide.

LP. Liquidity pool, or liquidity provider. The pool is where the token trades; the provider is whoever deposited into it.

Locked / burned LP. Liquidity that can't be withdrawn for a set time, or ever. The check that matters most on a new token.

Meta. A theme that attention clusters around for a period. Cat meta, AI meta, memestocks. How they form and rotate.

Narrative. The story behind a token. What it's about, why people care. The actual asset, in practice.

Runner. A token that's currently moving up hard.

Mainstay. A memecoin that's survived long enough to have a stable community. Rare.

Launches and mechanics

Launchpad. A platform that deploys tokens in one transaction. Pump.fun, four.meme, Pons. How they work.

Bonding curve. The pricing formula a token trades on before it has a real pool. Earlier buyers pay less, mechanically. Full explanation.

Graduation / bonding. When a curve completes and the token migrates to a real DEX pool.

CA. Contract address. The only thing that identifies a token. Names and tickers are copied constantly.

Deployer / dev. The wallet that created the token. Its history is the most useful thing you can learn about a new launch.

Snipe. Buying in the first block after a launch. How it works.

Bundle. A launch where the deployer buys from many wallets in the same block, taking a large share of supply before the public can. How to spot one.

Stock-paired. A memecoin whose pool is denominated in a tokenised stock rather than the chain's native asset. Robinhood Chain specific. Explanation.

Trading

DEX. Decentralised exchange. Where on-chain tokens trade, against a pool rather than an order book. How they work.

Slippage. The gap between the price you saw and the price you got. Also the tolerance you set for it. Full guide.

Price impact. How much your own trade moves the pool. Separate from slippage, and worse on thin liquidity.

Gas. The fee you pay to have a transaction processed. Varies enormously by chain. Explained.

Priority fee. The extra you pay to be processed faster. Often the hidden cost in bot trading. Explained.

Limit order. An order that executes only at a price you set. Explained.

Take profit / stop loss. Automatic sells above or below your entry. How to set them.

Trailing stop. A stop that follows price up and triggers on a set giveback from the high.

Scaling out. Selling portions on the way up rather than trying to pick a top.

Round trip. Being up, not selling, and riding it back to breakeven or below. The most common way people lose.

Perps. Perpetual futures. Leveraged directional bets that never expire. Explained.

Bridging. Moving assets between chains. How to do it safely.

Security and scams

Rug / rug pull. The team removes liquidity or dumps supply, taking the price to zero. How to spot one.

Honeypot. A token you can buy but can't sell. How they work.

MEV / sandwich. Bots that see your pending transaction and trade around it to take a cut. Explained.

Wash trading. Fake volume from wallets trading with themselves. How to spot it.

Approval. Permission you grant a contract to move your tokens. Persists until revoked. Why it matters.

Drainer. A malicious contract or site that empties wallets via approvals or signed transactions. How it happens.

Non-custodial. You hold the keys; the platform can't access your funds. What it actually means.

Seed phrase. The words that recover your wallet. Anyone who has them has everything. Never share it.

Freeze / mint authority. On Solana, the power to lock accounts or create more tokens. Both should be revoked.

Renounced. On EVM chains, the deployer has given up the ability to modify the contract.

People and culture

KOL. Key opinion leader. An account with an audience. How to track their wallets, and why it's less useful than it sounds.

Cosign. A KOL publicly backing a token. The most common single-day catalyst.

Smart money. Wallets with consistently good entries. How to track them, and why the edge decays.

Copy trading. Automatically mirroring another wallet's trades. Does it work.

CTO. Community takeover. When the original team leaves and holders keep the project going.

Ape. To buy quickly without much research.

Trenches. The low-cap, high-risk end of the memecoin market. Where launches happen.

Degen. Someone who trades the trenches. Affectionate, usually.

Jeet. Someone who sells early. Derogatory, usually unfairly.

Bag. Your position in a token.

Exit liquidity. The people who buy so that earlier holders can sell. Often you, if you're not careful.

gm. Good morning. The universal greeting.

Risk and discipline

Base rate. The share of memecoins that go to zero. Most of them. The number that should size every position.

Position sizing. How much goes into any one trade. The thing that keeps you alive.

Bankroll. The money you've allocated to trading and treated as spent.

Tilt. Trading emotionally after a loss, usually by sizing up. The psychology.

Paper gains. Unrealised profit on a position you haven't sold. A number on a screen until it isn't.

DYOR. Do your own research. The five-minute version.

NFA. Not financial advice. Attached to everything, including this.

Axxel is a trading terminal for all of the above: market, limit, trailing and sniper orders, stop loss and take profit, token analysis, MEV protection, across Ethereum, Base, BSC, Solana and Robinhood Chain. Flat 0.9%, non-custodial, no subscription.

Crypto trading carries risk. Most memecoins lose value. Nothing here is financial advice. Axxel is not available in all regions.
