Beginner explanation of what memecoins are and how they work

A memecoin is a crypto token with no utility. It doesn't do anything, isn't backed by anything, and usually doesn't pretend otherwise. Its entire value comes from people wanting to own it, which is to say from attention.

That sounds like a dismissal and it isn't. Memecoins are the most actively traded assets in crypto by volume, the reason most new chains get their first users, and where a large share of the people reading this got started. Understanding them properly is worth doing.

Where they came from

Dogecoin, in 2013, as a joke about how easy it had become to launch a cryptocurrency. It's still one of the largest assets in the space.

For years memecoins were rare and launching one took some technical effort. That changed when launchpads made it a thirty-second, near-free process. Now tens of thousands launch every day, which is both the reason the category is so active and the reason almost all of them are worthless.

What gives them value

Attention, and only attention.

A memecoin's price reflects how many people currently want to hold it and how strongly. When attention arrives, through a cosign, a piece of news, a good joke, or a community deciding to build something, the price goes up. When attention leaves, it goes down, and there's nothing underneath to stop it.

That makes them reflexive: price attracts attention, which raises price, which attracts more. And it works in reverse just as fast. The full mechanism is in why memecoins move.

The base rate

Most memecoins go to zero. Not many, most, and usually within days.

That's not a warning, it's the distribution you're operating in. The ones that survive do so because they caught genuine attention and held it, which is rare. The ones that don't were either never going to or were built specifically to take money from whoever bought them.

Where they trade

On-chain, through decentralised exchanges, on several chains. Solana has the most volume. Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain each have active scenes with their own character. Ethereum is where the oldest and largest ones live. The chain comparison covers the differences.

You buy them with a self-custody wallet, through a DEX or a trading bot. No account, no signup, no KYC, which is part of why they move as fast as they do.

Before your first one

Four things worth having in place, in order.

A wallet set up properly, with anything you'd hate to lose kept separate from what you're trading. The wallet setup guide covers it in ten minutes.

An understanding of what can go wrong. Rug pulls, honeypots, and how to check for them in five minutes.

A rule for how much goes into any one position. Size as though it's going to zero, because it probably will.

And a decision about when you'd sell, made before you buy. The most common way people lose money isn't a scam. It's being up and not leaving.

The honest framing

Memecoins are closer to gambling than to investing, and it's worth going in knowing that. Where they differ is that information is public, sizing is yours, and exits are yours, which means process affects outcomes. Most people don't use any of that. The ones who do are the ones still around in six months.

There's a longer version of that argument in is memecoin trading gambling.

Axxel is a trading terminal for exactly this: market, limit, trailing and sniper orders, stop loss and take profit, token analysis, MEV protection, across Ethereum, Base, BSC, Solana and Robinhood Chain. Flat 0.9%, non-custodial, no subscription. If you're starting today, the Solana buying guide is the walkthrough from wallet to first trade.

Start small, run one full cycle, and treat the first month as tuition.

Crypto trading carries risk. Most memecoins lose value. Nothing here is financial advice. Axxel is not available in all regions.
